Mavericks stormed the ski slopes for the annual “Mavs Take Over the Mountain”. Music, powder and prizes brought both students and alumni together for cold weather sports at Powderhorn Mountain Resort.
This annual event held by Colorado Mesa University (CMU) took place on Jan. 31. “Mavs Take Over the Mountain” had a few alluring factors including discounted passes for alumni, prizes and live music to change the skiing/snowboarding experience!
“To me, it’s another day to go snowboarding,” Current CMU student Jeremy Johann explains. “Another day on the mountain, with perks […] I put myself in the raffle!”
Although Jeremy has been ripping the mountain for years on end, the prizes are what got him excited today. This isn’t the only reason for students to make their way up to Powderhorn.
“I usually ride pretty hard, but it’s nice to see other people that I know and get to hang out,” said CMU student Lucas Lackey.
He further explained that he has been snowboarding since he was five and is very skilled. Though the mountain was more crowded than usual, he wasn’t bothered.
Powderhorn Resort is well known for supporting beginner snowboarders and skiers in their journey to learning the skills to maneuver the mountain. Part of these efforts include the Bob Beverly program, a memorial effort that provides resources for new skiers and snowboarders. Under the program, first-timers can take three free lessons and have the option to purchase a $99 Rookie season pass when they’re finished.
CMU worked diligently in partnership with Powderhorn to create an all inclusive event that brings together beginners and experts of the mountains, as well as students and alumni. The main goal of this event was to have people of all ages and skill levels on the mountain having fun while representing CMU positively.
“I started [learning] last year for Mavs Take Over The Mountain. We have a group of friends that we met through CMU that come down for this event,” said CMU alumna Sierra Martinez.
While cruising down the mountain or just walking around there was definitely a different vibe at Powderhorn during this event. Mavs Take Over The Mountain gave a very unique sense of community that isn’t offered at every school. With the music ringing up the slopes, the various ages hanging out all over the mountain and the excitement over the prizes, this event was meant to bring the Mavs together.
For students who missed their opportunity, Mavs Take Over the Mountain will return next year. Students can also visit Powderhorn Resort until it closes for the season, which usually occurs around the beginning of April.
