The Mavericks beat their conference rivals 16-6 in Salt Lake City, Utah as three different Mavericks scored four points in the game.
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) assisted 10 of their 16 goals today as their ball movement was able to keep the Griffins defense on their toes. The Mavericks also won the ground ball battle 54 to 26.
Westminster College’s goalie Gavin Beilman finished the game with 14 saves.
Freshman attackman/midfielder Hunter Holcomb got CMU on the board first in the opening minute and a half of the game. Andoni Odencrantz tied the game at one with a goal of his own for the Griffins with 6:09 left in the first quarter.
Freshman midfielder Sergio Pelayo gave the Mavericks the lead back as he scored his fourth goal of the season.
The Mavericks offense kicked into gear after Pelayo’s goal as they scored five unanswered goals to go up 7-1 to end the first quarter.
Neither team gave up a goal until redshirt freshman attackman A.J. Switzer scored with 6:49 left in the quarter. Merritt McMahon tried to get WC’s offense back into rhythm as he scored with 2:15 left in the first half to cut CMU’s lead down to seven points.
CMU tacked on two more goals before the end of the half to put themselves up 11-2.
McMahon got the Griffins on the board first in the second half, but the Mavericks answered with three goals of their own to give them a 14-3 lead. Gavin Piva scored the final goal of the third quarter with 8:15 left in the quarter.
Each team scored two goals in the fourth quarter as the Mavericks were able to prevent the Griffins from getting back into the game.
Switzer and Pelayo finished the game with two goals and two assists against the Griffins. Redshirt freshman midfielder Drew Eickelman ended the game with one goal and three assists.
Freshman faceoff man Dylan Checketts controlled the faceoff x in the game as he won 19 of the 26 faceoffs.
The Maverick’s next game is Friday, April 9 at 1 p.m. against Adams State University in Alamosa, Colo.
