The Mavericks continue their four-game home stretch with a close, late game, loss to No. 22 Dixie State University (DSU) with a final score of 67-62.

The Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Men’s Basketball Team finished with an overall 49.1 percent shots made from the field and a 21.1 percent success rate from the arc. Combine this with 17 total turnovers compared to DSU’s 14, the Mavericks were struggling to get something going for a good portion of the game.

We’re trying to keep the ball out of the paint and compete really hard defensively, which is what our guys did, particularly in the second half we held them to 35 percent shooting, CMU Head Coach Mike DeGeorge said. “Then fight our way into the paint and make great decisions when we get there and we’re just not doing a good enough job of that. We turned the ball over 17 times, we just played at a deficiency in positions again which has been happening a lot against the better teams.”

Low shooting percentage and bad shot selection was what seemed to be the main issue out on the court. The Mavericks also finished the game with only four offensive rebounds compared to the Trailblazers 12.

“Our offensive focus was taking care of the ball and we just didn’t get that done again this weekend,” DeGeorge said. “We’re not going to play at a championship level until we get that figured out and so we’ll keep plugging away at it and hopefully by next weekend, we can take a step forward.”

A step forward is what the Mavericks need at this point in the season. With this loss, CMU drops to (14-9) on the season and (10-7) within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).  Senior, Tommy Nuno, led the Mavericks with 13 points and five rebounds on the night.

The Mavericks will continue RMAC play next weekend against Colorado Christian University at Brownson Arena on Feb 14th at 7:30p.m.
