Mavericks incredible shooting ends losing streak against the Cougars

The Mavericks shot 63 percent or better from the field and from the three-point line.

The Mavericks three-game skid comes to a halt with a 20-point victory on the road against Colorado Christian University (CCU).  

Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) shooting was the x-factor in the game as they shot 64.8 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from three, as it helped them hold the lead in the game for 39:15 in the game. Kolton Peterson led the Mavericks in scoring with 24 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field and behind the arc.

The first ten minutes of the opening half was controlled by CMU as they opened on a 22 to 9 run against the Cougars. The Mavericks caught fire in the first half from behind the arc as they shot 62.5 percent that led to a 13-point lead at the half, and CMU was winning the early rebounding battle 19 to 16 with 18 of those rebounds coming on the defensive end.  

The Mavericks hot shooting continued in the second half as they shot 71.4 percent from the field as they extended their lead to 23 points in the second. Peterson scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half as the Cougars were unable to run him off the three-point line.  

CMU’s bench played a major role in the game as they scored 45 points, and as a team, the Mavericks scored 42 points in the paint in their 90-70 win over the Cougars.  

The only area of the game where the Mavericks struggled was in the turnover category as they had 19 and allowed 22 points off turnovers.  

CMU’s next game will be Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. against Westminster College as they start a four-game homestand.
