After an emotional night, and the passing of their teammate, the Colorado Mesa baseball team capped off a four-game sweep of Colorado Christian with a 10-2 win on Sunday.
With #17Strong warm ups, Ryan Teixeira started at third base for the Mavericks. Garrett Ball replaced his best friend after the opening pitch and in the bottom half of the 1st, singled for the first base runner of the day for the Mavericks.
The next pitch was sent into the parking lot from right fielder Bligh Madris and the first run of the day was scored by number 17 as the Mavericks took a 2-0 lead.
The runs didn’t stop there as the Mavericks added another two in the 2nd, one in the 3rd and 4th, and two more in the 5th and 7th.
Madris and Ball lead the Mavericks on the afternoon as both tallied four RBIs. Madris finished 4-5 with a home run (2) and a double. Ball ended 2-5, both of the single variety.
“Honestly, it had to be him. I don’t know who else it would have been,” Madris said of his 1st inning home run.
“I think our mindset and our approach today was impeccable. I think with what everyone was going through and feeling we handled it really well,” Ball, Teixeira’s best friend, and former high school teammate, said.
The Mavericks finished the series sweep outscoring the Cougars 48-5 and out hitting them 55-27. Colorado Mesa improved to 11-5 (4-0 RMAC) on the year while the Cougars fell to 6-12 (0-4 RMAC).
The Mavericks will hit the road this upcoming weekend as they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on the UCCS Mountain Lions in a four-game set. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 10.
