Colorado Mesa’s women’s lacrosse team entered today’s game confident in their offense after defeating Westminster 18-8 in the season opener. After tying the game at 2 apiece in the 16 minute of the first half, the Rangers fired back a minute later and ran away with the game. Regis, who came is as the 17 ranked team in the nation, went on to win 17-4.
In the first half the Rangers scored 5 goals in the span of six minutes and took a 10-2 lead into the locker room. In the second half it wasn’t much better for CMU as they got outscored 7-2 in the half.
The Rangers outshot the Mavericks 28-14 on the day, including 23-7 in shots on goal. Regis’s defense also forced the Mavericks into 13 turnovers over the course of the contest.
Individually for the Mavericks, junior midfielder Jessica Cook led the team with 2 goals on 6 attempts. Jillian Pfeifer started in net for the Mavericks and gave up 12 goals on the day, collecting just 5 saves. As for the Rangers they were led by Sarah Myres who scored 3 times and they had four other players each score twice.
With the loss CMU moves to 1-1 to start out the season. The Mavericks next matchup will be against Adams State University on March 4 at Walker Field. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
