The Mavericks pull out a tightly contested 10-6 win over the Thunderwolves in their final regular-season matchup of the year.
Freshman midfielder Logan Smith led the Mavericks in scoring with four points and recorded career highs in goals, assists, points, shots, shots on goal and caused turnovers. He scored three goals on five shots and dished out one assist in the Maverick’s win. He caused one turnover in the game as well.
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) outshot the Thunderwolves in the game as the Mavericks took 52 shots compared to the 29 for the Thunderwolves. Colorado State University-Pueblo’s (CSUP) goalie Ethan Ferrie kept them in the game as he recorded 23 saves in the game.
Redshirt junior attackman Blake Amiatu opened the scoring up in the first quarter as he ripped a shot into the net just over a minute into the game. Sophomore defender Trey Corkin III put CMU up 2-0 with 10:22 left in the first quarter as he picked up a ground ball on a clear, beat three defenders to the net and fired a shot into the goal.
Redshirt sophomore attackman Jed Brummett put CMU up by three with 1:52 remaining in the first quarter as snuck up the crease, caught a pass and finished over Ferrie’s head.
Trevor Thompson got CSUP onto the scoreboard on an extra-man opportunity off an assist from Boston Dumas. Cameron Hancock brought the Thunderwolves within one goal with 8:08 remaining in the second quarter.
Smith put the Mavericks up 4-2 three minutes later as he dodged down the left alley to fire a bounce shot into the back of the net. Thompson scored his second goal of the quarter to bring CSUP back within one goal with 4:37 left in the first half. Smith closed out the first half on a positive note for CMU as he scored his second unassisted goal of the quarter to give the Mavericks a 5-3 lead going into the halftime break.
Redshirt sophomore midfielder/attackman AJ Switzer got the Mavericks on the board first in the second half with a goal with 8:34 remaining in the third quarter. CMU added three more goals in the quarter and held the Thunderwolves scoreless in the third quarter to take a 9-3 lead.
Aryan Krause and Hancock ended the Thunderwolves’ scoring drought with a pair of goals to bring them within four goals with 6:06 left in the game. Freshman attackman Luke McGahey scored the final goal of the game for the Mavericks off an assist from Smith and put CMU up 10-5. The Thunderwolves scored the final goal of the game with 35 seconds left in the game, but the Mavericks pulled out the four-goal win.
CMU had 10 different players register at least one point in the game, and Smith and Switzer were the only two to score multiple points in the game. Switzer scored one goal and dished out one assist in the game.
The Mavericks caused 16 of the Thunderwolves’ 29 turnovers in the game. CMU also controlled the ground ball battle in the game as they picked up 34 ground balls compared to the Thunderwolves’ 23.
CMU’s next game is Sunday, April 24 at noon against Adams State University in the final home game of the season.
