The Mavericks held the Hawks scoreless and didn’t allow a shot on goal in the fourth quarter to pull out the 10-5 win.
Redshirt sophomore midfielder Trent Pernell scored a game-high four points. He scored three goals on three shots and recorded one assist against Rockhurst University (RU).
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) won every faceoff in the game as they went 17 of 17 at the faceoff x. Sophomore faceoff man Dylan Checketts was a big part of the domination at the faceoff x as he went 15 of 15 at x in the game. The Mavericks also dominated the ground ball battle as they picked up 26 ground balls compared to RU’s nine ground balls in the game.
Redshirt sophomore midfielder James Steinke got the Mavericks going early in the game as he scored the first goal of the game just over one minute into the game. Redshirt senior attackman Carson Schwark put the Mavericks up 2-0 as he got his hands free to fire a shot into the top right corner.
The Mavericks added two more goals in the first quarter including a long pole goal from redshirt junior long-stick midfielder Hayden Scherr.
Jack Vande Ven got the Hawks on the board just 45 seconds into the second quarter and he scored another goal five minutes later to bring the Hawks within two goals. Redshirt sophomore attackman Jed Brummett came back with a goal of his own to put CMU back up by three goals with 3:43 left in the second quarter.
Grant Brunsvold scored the final goal of the second quarter with 2:12 remaining in the quarter to bring the Hawks within two goals going into the halftime break.
Brummett opened the second half with a goal on an extra-man opportunity to put CMU up 6-3 with 11:04 left in the third quarter. Vande Ven and Alec Heflin scored the final two goals of the game for RU to bring them within one, but the Mavericks held them scoreless for the rest of the game.
Pernell put the Mavericks up 7-5 as he got his hands free for a step-down shot that found the back of the net with 4:11 left in the third quarter.
Pernell scored his final two goals of the game with two consecutive goals to open the fourth quarter and put the Mavericks up 9-5 with 9:29 left in the game. Brummett scored the final goal of the game to put the Mavericks up by five goals with 8:14 left in the game.
Steinke and Brummett both registered three points in the Maverick’s win over the Hawks. Steinke scored one goal and registered two assists in the game. Brummett scored three goals on seven shots in the game.
CMU went three of five on extra-man opportunities in the game, and the Mavericks assisted seven of their ten goals against the Hawks.
The Maverick’s next game is Friday, April 22 at 3:30 p.m. against Colorado State University-Pueblo in Pueblo, Colo.
