The Maverick’s lost their fourth of their last five games as they fell to No. 7 ranked Regis University (RU) 10-17.
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) had control of the draw control circle in the game as they won 18 of the 31 draws in the game. The Mavericks turned the ball over 28 times and 23 of their turnovers were caused by the Rangers.
Redshirt sophomore attacker Melanie Evans led the Mavericks in scoring with four points in the game. She scored two goals and recorded two assists in the game.
RU opened the game by scoring four unanswered goals in the opening seven minutes of the game. Freshman attacker Caroline Ohngemach got the Mavericks on the board in the game with a low-angle shot that found the far-right pipe with 12 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Rangers opened the second quarter with a three-goal run to take a 7-1 lead. Evans stopped RU’s run as she fought through the defense to the front of the net to finish with a low shot with 9:46 left in the first half.
Alexis Parker answered for the Rangers to put them up 8-2. Freshman midfielder Ali Bryant came back with a one-timer goal off an assist from Evans with 7:25 remaining in the first half.
The Rangers scored one final goal in the first half with 3:03 left in the first half to take a 9-3 lead into the halftime break.
Both teams traded goals to open the second half and the Mavericks were still down by six goals with 6:28 left in the third quarter. RU scored two more goals in the third quarter to take a 13-5 lead.
Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kiley Davis opened the fourth quarter with two straight goals to bring the Mavericks with six goals. Redshirt sophomore attacker Regan Wentz scored the third consecutive goal for CMU to bring the score to 8-13 with 11:52 left in the game.
Maddie Northcut put the Rangers up by six with 9:21 left in the game on a free-position shot. Bryant scored CMU’s ninth goal of the game with 8:55 remaining in the game as she beat her defender with a split-dodge into the middle of the defense and scored with her left hand.
Ohngemach scored the final goal of the game for CMU in transition as she waited on the weak side of the Ranger’s defense, caught a pass from Evans and buried a shot with her left hand.
Lucy Johnson got the Rangers on the board for the final time with 49 seconds left in the game to take a 17-10 lead.
Ohngemach scored three points in the game and picked up two ground balls in the game. She scored two goals and registered one assist in the Maverick’s effort.
The Maverick’s next game is Sunday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m. against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at Mountain Lion Stadium.
