The Mavericks remain undefeated as they were able to score in an overtime thriller against Northwest Nazarene University (NNU).
Freshman forward Lila Dere continued her dominant start to the 2021 season as she was able to find the goal on a pass from junior midfielder Lexi Newton in the 96 minute of the game to give Colorado Mesa University (CMU) the win. The goal was Dere’s fourth goal in three games this season.
Even though the Mavericks were not able to score in the first half of the game. They were able to find the net at the 58 minute to tie the game at one.
The goal was shot by redshirt sophomore defender Michaela Dangler, who was one of three CMU players to get their first goal of the season in the game. After Dangler’s goal, the Nighthawks responded just a minute later. NNU once again was up by one.
Redshirt freshman midfielder Haley Klasner found a pass from sophomore midfielder Mikayla Eccher and was able to get it into the back of the net to tie up the game once again in the 82 minute. Klasner also was handed the assist on the goal by Dangler.
The Mavericks took over on offense in the second half as they held the ball long enough to make 12 shots and 16 shots in total. They took nine shots on the goal.
CMU is now 3-0 to start the 2021 season and is looking to continue their strong start to the season as they stay in Salt Lake City, Utah to take on Minot State University on Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
