The Mavericks season came to an end as they took a late inning loss to West Texas A&M (WTAM).
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) baseball played in a tight game Saturday afternoon against WTAM. The winner of this game would advance and take on a very talented Angelo State team
The Mavericks started Saturday afternoon on top as they got two runs on the board in the second inning. Junior infielder Caleb Farmer grounded out to the pitcher allowing senior outfielder Tyle Parker to score. Sophomore infielder Harrison Rodgers then came through hitting a hard double down the right field line allowing junior catcher Spencer Bramwell to score.
Another run came through for CMU as another sacrifice ground out from Parker came in the third. This time junior outfielder Matt Turner scored on the play.
The Buffalos responded to the Mavericks three runs with four runs of their own. In the fourth, J Martinez singled to right field with the bases loaded. Kennedy Badgett and Keone Givens scored. Two batters later, Justin Robinson doubled allowing Martinez and Ryan Johnson to score.
Just like that the Mavericks had to go to work.
After a scoreless fifth inning, CMU responded in the sixth with another double from Ridgers allowing Bramwell to score after he led the inning off a triple.
After a pitching change from the Buffalos junior infielder Chase Hamilton grounded out to the pitcher getting the sacrifice allowing Farmer to score.
Hamilton singled and had another RBI to his name as Farmer came around to score.
WTAM gave it all they had in the top half of the ninth inning and it worked in their favor.
Johnson singled, tying up the game at six runs a piece. Then a single from Eric Ortiz put his team in front as there was once again another lead change in the game.
The Mavericks went down in order with two strikeouts as they saw their season come to a sudden end.
Rodgers and Bramwell both ended the game with a multihit game. Rodgers was also able to collect two more RBIs on the season.
The Mavericks sent freshman left handed pitcher Kannon Handy to the mound to get things started. Handy had a decent start on the mound as he went five innings, gave up four runs on five hits and walked four batters. He was able to strike out four batters on the day.
Senior and junior right handed pitchers Trevin Reynolds and Anthony Durbano finished the game off for CMU.
Durbano was able to work for three innings while giving up one run and four walks. Durbano was able to strike out five. Reynolds came in for the ninth and gave up three hits, two runs and struck out one.
The Mavericks finish their season with a record of 42-7. They went 34-2 in conference play and 27-3 at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction, Colo.
McGeary finished the season with an average of .486 at the plate along with 87 hits and 88 RBIs. While on the mound sophomore right handed pitcher Andrew Morris led the Mavericks starting rotation with a 2.13 earned run average. Morris also had 115 strikeouts on the season.
The Mavericks will start the 2022 season in late February of 2022.
