The Mavericks enjoyed their senior night and took home the victory.
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) took the win. They had amazing blocks on goals and communication was key.
The Roadrunners took the ball from the beginning and headed up the field. The moment the ball was taken the Mavericks were persistent to get it back.
“I think we talked a lot about our midfield getting on the ball more and finding gaps in the middle of their low block. Once our midfielders could find the ball in that space I thought that we could control the ball from that,” Head Coach Megan Remec said.
The moment the ball was shot senior goalie Emily Signorio took towards the bottom center for a save.
“I think I was just trying to stay calm. I didn’t want to go and overcommit. I wanted to make sure that I was staying steady and keeping set, and thankfully, it worked out. I was able to kick it out and my defense did a great job of clearing it from there,” Signorio said.
The Mavericks ended the game on a high note as freshman forward Lila Dere scored at 74:10. This left the Mavericks 1-0.
Signorio had a total of five saves for the Mavericks. Three of the five being in the second half.
“Playing on this pitch for the last time has been completely surreal. I almost thought this day would never get here. It seems so far coming from freshman year as you watch your own seniors play. It meant so much to watch the team come together today and kick some butt,” Signorio said.
The Mavericks next game is Sunday, April 11 at 2:30 against Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah.
