The Mavericks lost to the Griffins in a double overtime game.
They maintained an even balance amongst both sides of the field. Making sure to push their offenses further and faster.
At 24:19, junior midfielder Lexi Newton attacked the ball after multiple passes between the opposing team. She blocked the pass and took the ball to the other side of the field.
The ball was passed to freshman forward Lila Dere who took a shot. The shot hit off the goal and ended in the Mavericks hands again.
Towards 21:08 Colorado Mesa University (CMU) put up a strong fight and held their stance on defense. They were consistent with their ball control and aggressiveness. The defense was quick to attack and not give the opportunity for a shot.
Westminster College (WC) made their first goal at 17:38 after two different fouls on individuals from both teams.
A yellow flag was thrown after one of the Griffins grabbed and pulled on a Maverick athlete. Soon after, a penalty kick goal by Dere put CMU on the board.
Both teams continued with a consistent effort on either side of the field, which led to a double overtime.
The first overtime had both teams fighting. The Mavericks were stuck against the Griffins at the goal. WC made a few attempts. Ready to try again, they kicked right towards freshman defense Carli Dare where she blocked the ball.
The ball was taken down the sideline. It landed at sophomore forward Kristen Capans feet, she then went in for a left footed shot but was not successful.
After failed attempts at a goal the double overtime began. The Mavericks started off strong and maintained their ball control. CMU made a strong attempt at a shot that was slightly off.
Westminster wrapped up the game with a steal at the goal.
The Mavericks will continue their season on the road as they head to Durango, Colo. to take on Fort Lewis College March 26 at 3 p.m.
