Mental health is something that is dealt with almost daily by many individuals and is still not talked about all that much. In 2014, a health study by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, regarding mental health, found that 1 in 5 Americans dealt with some kind of mental health issue. That same study said that 1 in 25 Americans have a serious mental health issue, such as schizophrenia.
Here are some ways Colorado Mesa University (CMU) students take care of their mental health.
“Always be appreciative of what you have, it’s important to stay compassionate,” freshman Lauren Brandt said. “What helped me get through this was trying to see the best everyday, simply adapting and living normally. Have time for self reflection.”
Jaylee Vera, a freshman here at CMU, said, “talking with friends and facetiming them everyday to keep in touch,” as well as “making tik toks with my sister and going hiking,” are some of the ways she takes care of her mental health. Going outdoors is freshman Sam Corcoran’s go to activity as well. “I try to go outdoors as much as possible,” Corcoran said.
Therapists suggest writing down what people are feeling, or draw it out. The point is to get those emotions out there. Another exercise people can do is focus on the good stuff you see. Make a list in your head of all the good things you remember, it helps focus their minds on the good in the world instead of the bad.
It is also recommended to take care of yourself physically. If your body isn’t well, then your mind won’t be either. Mental health is so much more than simply being happy. It is being in tune with your body and being at peace with your surroundings.
With programs such as IDON’TMIND and activities such as DAY WITHOUT HATE, it makes it that much easier to talk about. The most important thing you can do is recognize when you need help and ask for it. There is at least one person out there that will talk with you. Taking care of yourself mentally is how to get through times like these.
