The Mavericks rout the Grizzlies in a 24-1 win in their first matchup of the season.

Sophomore attacker Melanie Evans scored a game-high five points, and she has scored five points in back-to-back games. She finished the game with two goals along with three assists.

“Initially, I was just trying to make a pass and get it open for everyone because we really want to go off assists in these types of games and just work together to move the ball as quickly as we can,” Evans said.

Sophomore midfielders Kiley Davis and Xcaret Salvador each finished the game with four points.

Junior midfielder Ashton Whittle scored the first goal of the game just 24 seconds into play. Colorado Mesa University (CMU) quickly six-goal lead in the opening five minutes of the game.

Nina Sandler scored Adams State University’s (ASU) lone goal of the game with 25:08 left in the first half. CMU’s offense didn’t skip a beat as they scored 12 more goals before halftime.

Amber Wennerstrom scored her first goal of the season with 3:30 left in the first half.

The Mavericks then held the Grizzlies scoreless in the second half, and CMU slowed their scoring in the second half as they were up 18-1 at halftime.

CMU won 15 of the 20 draw controls at halftime.

“For myself, it’s fighting for the ball and not just watching it, that’s been a big work on for myself, and same with the girls in the circle as well. When I’m on the circle, it’s just like fighting for the ball and never giving up to get it in our stick, winning it clean,” sophomore midfielder Taylor Jakeman said.

Davis got the Mavericks on the board first off an assist from sophomore attacker Lauren Wick in the second half to score her 13 goal of the season.

Davis scored her third and final goal of the game with 18:19 left in the second half to put the Mavericks up 20-1. Wennerstrom and freshman attacker Ella Dillon scored the four final goals for CMU.

Wennerstrom scored her third and final goal of the game with 18 seconds left in the game off an assist from Salvador.

The Mavericks assisted 17 of their 24 goals in the contest.

“It was to work for each other, and I feel like having that goal of working for each other we were able to find those assists and not just think I want to score,” Whittle said. It was like what can I do to help the team, so it was more team vision rather than self, and I feel like that’s what really contributed to all those assists.”

Whittle scored two goals along with one assist, and she won four draw controls as well.

CMU won 19 of the 26 draw controls in the game as they were able to control the draw circle.

The Maverick’s next game is Sunday, April 3 at 1 p.m. against Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo.
