The Mavericks outscored the Grizzlies 26-10 in the first two games of the series.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) returned to the diamond after having a week off of play as they faced Adams State University (ASU) Saturday afternoon. In both games it was back and forth with each team finding ways to score. But in the end the Mavericks were able to finish the day with the sweep.

Redshirt Outfielder Lauren Wedman continued her dominant start to the 2021 season as she went 5-5 in the second game of the day.

In the fifth inning Wedman was able to hit a long two-run home run over the right field wall as redshirt senior outfielder Brooke Doumer was on second for Wedman. Wedman’s second home run of the day was in the next inning as she was able to finish the game for the Mavericks with a home run to center field.

Wedman was not the only Maverick to hit multiple home runs in the two mercy rule wins against ASU. Redshirt sophomore Nicole Christensen had a home run in each game today as well. Christensen’s first home run came in the first inning and was a two run home run to left center field and freshman catcher Ally Distler scored on the play.

Wedman leads the team in RBIs with 21.Redshirt sophomore pitcher Ellie Smith comes in second with 19 after her four RBIs today.

Christensen came up to bat with Wedman and Smith on base in the first inning of the second game. She was again able to sit on the first pitch she saw and fired that ball into left field for a three run home run.

Christensen had seven RBIs after the doubleheader.

All of the Mavericks batters were able to capitalize in errors made by the Grizzlies defense as they had three errors in the first game and six errors in the second game.

Base running came in clutch for the Mavericks as they had nine stolen bases on the day.

Redshirt freshman second baseman Aislyn Sharp continued having a great season defensively and offensively for the Mavericks. Sharp had four hits on the day as well as getting hit by a pitch in the first game.

Redshirt junior pitcher Paige Adair got the start in game one for the Mavericks. Adair struggled out of the gate as she gave up two runs in the first inning. She was able to find her footing in the circle but only was able to get through three innings in the first game.

Adair gave up four earned runs, walked two and had one strikeouts while throwing 61 pitches.

Redshirt sophomore Shea Mauser came into relief and looked solid as she was able to get the save in the first game. She also had two walks and one strikeout.

Mauser stayed in the circle for the second game and like Adair could not get through a tough Grizzlies lineup. Smith came into the game after Mauser gave up five earned runs in two and one third innings.

Smith was able to find the strike zone for two strikeouts against ASU. Smith’s final line of the day included four hits, three walks and those two strikeouts over three and two thirds innings.

The Mavericks and Grizzlies will meet again on Sunday in another doubleheader in Grand Junction, Colo starting at 11 a.m.
