The Mavericks end their road trip with a win

The Mavericks improve to 2-1 on the season with their 9-8 victory over the Chargers.

The Mavericks finished their road trip with a 9-8 win over the Chargers, and the Mavericks took 62 shots in the game.  

The University of Alabama Huntsville’s (UAH) goalie Zak Welsh finished the game with 21 saves.  

Redshirt junior attackman Carson Schwark scored a game-high six points as he scored four goals and two assists. Redshirt freshman attackman Alex Blatt led the team in assists as he finished the game with four.  

Redshirt freshman midfielder Trent Pernell got the Mavericks on the board first off a pass from Schwark. Preston Deno immediately answered for UAH to tie the game up at one.

Schwark scored his first goal of the game with 6:07 left in the first quarter to put CMU up 2-1. Schwark either scored or assisted on every goal in the first quarter as he assisted on redshirt freshman midfielder James Steinke’s goal to end the quarter.  

The Chargers scored two unanswered goals to tie the game up at three with 8:23 left in the second quarter. Both teams traded goals in the second before the Mavericks took a two-goal lead with 50 seconds left in the first half.  

CMU opened the second half with three straight goals to give themselves a 9-4 lead as Pernell caught a pass from Steinke to bury in the back of the net. Pernell’s goal with 8:13 left in the third quarter was the final goal for the Mavericks in the game.  

Luke LeVette scored his 10 goal of the season and netted the Charger’s fifth goal of the game off an assist from Josh Campbell. LeVette’s goal started the Charger’s four-goal run that brought UAH within one goal of the Mavericks.  

Bryce Ferraro scored the first goal of the fourth quarter as he scored on a man-up opportunity. Kyle Light brought the Chargers within one point with 3:03 left in the game.  

The Mavericks defense buckled down late in the game as they were able to prevent the Chargers from tying the game up and sending it into overtime.  

The faceoff battle was close between the Chargers and the Mavericks as UAH won 11 to CMU’s 10.  

CMU forced the Chargers to turn the ball over 24 times in the game.  

The Maverick’s next game is Tuesday, March 30 at 4 p.m. against Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo.
