McGeary and Reynolds lead the Mavericks in win

Sophomore catcher Haydn McGeary hit for the cycle as the Mavericks put up 25 runs against the Grizzlies.

McGeary did something that only some can say that they have done at the plate; hit the cycle. The more impressive stat is that he did it Saturday afternoon in the first four innings.

The first hit was a two run home run with the speedy junior shortstop Chase Hamilton in scoring position. Hamilton also had a solid afternoon as he went 2-3 at the plate.

The Mavericks were able to bat around in the first allowing McGeary to come up again. This time it was the double that scored Hamilton and senior outfielder Tyler Parker.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) scored 10 times in the first inning alone.

A McGeary single put him on base for junior first baseman Nolan Walker. In Walker’s first at bat of the afternoon he would have a two run home run to center field.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, McGeary was just trying to extend the already long lead for the team but he also needed a triple for the cycle. On the 1-1 count he did just that senior infielder Blaine Demello and junior outfielder Matt Cassin both scored putting runs 20 and 21 on the board for CMU. McGeary also would find himself with that triple to complete his cycle.

McGeary was not the only CMU batter to hit well against Adams State University (ASU).  Three Mavericks coming out of the first inning already had two hits. McGeary, Hamilton and junior designated hitter Spencer Bramwell all racked up two hits in the first.

CMU produced 21 hits to score their 25 runs on the day. Seven different mavericks had doubles in this one. While the two Mavericks in McGeary and Walker were the only two to hit triples as well as home runs.

Nine walks were also given to the Mavericks as two of them scored a run.

On the other side of the ball for the Mavericks, senior right-handed pitcher Trevin Reynolds delivered a solid outing for CMU.

Reynolds was able to find the strike zone early and continued to stay in charge of this game defensively. He was able to get through five solid innings of work and while he had three walks to his name they really did not affect him at all.

He only allowed two hits and two runs and only one of those runs was earned. Reynolds was able to strike out ASU 11 times and he had five consecutive strikeouts to end the first and through the second inning. The 11 strikeouts is a season high for Reynolds so far in 2021.

The Mavericks bullpen was untouchable as well as the three relievers that came in for the Mavericks combined for 11 strikeouts, no runs and only allowed two hits.

CMU finishes up this pod series weekend with a doubleheader tomorrow as they take on ASU at noon and Regis shortly after at 3:30 pm at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction, Colo.
