The Mavericks split the doubleheader with the Mountain Lions and had their first home loss of the season.
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) welcomed University of Colorado- Colorado Springs (UCCS) into town this weekend and kicked things off with a celebration. The team hosted their annual Swing for Life Pink Day.
UCCS got things started early as Sawyer Brewster hit a two-run home run off of redshirt junior Paige Adair to start off the afternoon.
The two-run home run did not hurt the Mavericks as they responded right away. With redshirt senior outfielder Brooke Doumer in scoring position, redshirt sophomore Lauren Wedman singled through the left side allowing Doumer to score.
The scoring continued for CMU as redshirt senior first baseman Sarah Staudle singled to second base. On the play, freshman Ally Distler advanced to second and then to third on a throwing error. The play also allowed redshirt sophomore third baseman Nicole Christensen to advance to third on the error.
Redshirt sophomore designated player/pitcher Ellie Smith scored on the previous play.
The Mavericks were in control of the rest of game one of the doubleheader as UCCS did not score the rest of the game.
In the fourth inning, Doumer on a 3-1 found a ball that she could drive and did just that as she hit her third home run of the season. Doumer ended the first game leading the mavericks with three runs batted in against the mountain lions. She also went 2-3 and also drew a walk.
The fifth inning was another big inning for CMU.
With Christensen and redshirt sophomore utility Brandi Haller on base, Distler walked up to the box knowing she needed to make the most of this opportunity for her team. She reached on a fielder’s choice to third base but a Mountain Lion fielding error by Sawyer Brewster allowed Haller to score.
With the bases loaded full of jerseys, redshirt freshman Aislyn Sharp was patient at the plate and trotted down to first on a 3-2 count. Christensen was able to walk home to put the mavericks up 6-2.
Helping extend the lead more was redshirt freshman Sarah Jorissen as she came into pinch hit. Jorissen hit a fly ball to right field that ended up being caught but Staudle tagged up and touched home. Doumer ended CMUs scoring as she singled through the left side and Sharp scored.
The Mavericks went on to win game one by a score of 9-2.
Adair got the ball to start off the weekend against the Mountain Lions and even though she started out not quite how she wanted to, she was able to get back on track.
The only runs she gave up was the two-run blast in the first inning. After that she threw the complete game having ten strikeouts and four hits. She did not give up a walk in this game.
Adair later came back into work relief for Smith in game two who found herself in a little bit of a jam.
In game two, Smith started off with the ball for CMU but was not able to gain control of the strike zone.
She only went two innings allowing two runs. UCCS was able to take advantage and draw two walks and gain two hits off of Smith.
In the offensive side of things, Wedman started the second game off the same way she started the first game. She once again singled allowing Doumer to score.
Staudle continued the scoring for the Mavericks when she singled allowing Smith to score. At the end of the first inning CMU led 2-0.
UCCS responded out of the gate tying the game in the second game. Peyton Raisman singled allowing Meghan Weidler to score. Then, Mia Perez doubled allowing Raismen to score.
Going into the sixth, redshirt freshman infielder Camryn Mullen doubled when she came into pinch hit. The Mavericks regained the lead when redshirt freshman outfielder Drew Sims scored on the play.
Entering the seventh, the Mountain Lions knew that they needed to get something going. Sawyer Brewster won the game as she hit another two-run blast against Adair.
The Mavericks and Mountain Lions will play another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m in Grand Junction,Colo.
