Mavericks offense shines against Rangers

The Colorado Mesa University (CMU) baseball team dominated in the field and in the batter’s box with a 16-4 victory.

In their second game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament (RMAC) CMU took on the Rangers of Regis University (RU).

The Mavericks got back to playing the short game knowing they can put as many runs up on the board. CMU played a really smart situational game as they used their speed and baseball IQ to their advantage.

“ I feel like we have been messing up that aspect of our game lately and skip was like we are going to go back to the fundamentals. We’re going to win and we will prove that we can do absolutely everything. I mean we can bunt runs in, we can hit home runs we can do anything we want to win and that is just broadening our area of expertise,” junior infielder Jordan Stubbings said.

In the fourth inning with junior catcher Spencer Bramwell on third the team tried to squeeze him home by having junior outfielder Johnny Carr bunt. Bramwell ended up being out on the play and Carr reached on the fielder’s choice.

“We have gotten trapped in the addiction to the home run thing and you know that doesn’t end well. So we decided going into this we were going to force some action and do what we call a mesa scrum like the execution stuff and for the most part we executed at a high level,” Head Coach Chris Hanks said.

The whole Mavericks starting lineup was swinging the bat well as only one batter in the starting lineup did not get a hit throughout the game.

Sophomore designated hitter Haydn McGeary came up with an RBI double in the fourth scoring Carr and junior outfielder Matt Turner.

Highlighting the Mavericks offense was Bramwell and Stubbings as they each hit home runs for CMU.

Stubbings got the offense going in the first as he hit a two run home run scoring McGeary. He later hit a three run home run in the eighth as McGeary and Turner were on base. The three run shot put the Mavericks at 14 runs.

Bramwell’s home run came back in the fifth as he would score freshman Harrison Rodgers. Bramwell ended the day with 3-5 with three RBIs.

“Just a pitch up in the zone where we can drive it so I mean they were throwing us a lot of off speeds the first time we played them and it seemed like they strayed a little away from that today so we were just ready to pound at the fastball,” Bramwell said.

The Mavericks pitching staff was on top of their game as they sent junior left-handed pitcher Ryan Day to start against RU. Going six and two third innings, Day only gave up five hits and two runs to the Rangers as he was able to strike out seven.

Senior and junior right handed pitchers Trevin Reynolds and Anthony Durbano were called upon to finish up the last two and two thirds of the game. Combined the two only gave up three hits and two runs.

The Mavericks will continue on in the winners side of the tournament as they will face the winner of Colorado State University-Pueblo and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
