The Mavericks took a dominant win over the Cowboys to begin the weekend series.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) baseball team put up 20 runs on the scoreboard on Friday night against New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU). This was the ninth time this season that CMU has scored 20 or more runs in a game.

The Mavericks kicked things off in the first inning as junior catcher Spencer Bramwell hit a three run home run to right field. The run scored sophomore designated hitter Haydn McGeary and junior outfielder Matt Turner to give CMU a quick 3-0 lead.

The home run by Bramwell was not the only home run he hit Friday night. Up again in the third, he hit a two run shot scoring Turner again.

Bramwell was one of three Mavericks to hit home runs on Friday night.

Sophomore outfielder Tanner Garner hit a home run before Bramwell hit his second one in the third. Garner’s home run was a solo shot to left field on a 2-2 count. In the fourth inning, junior third baseman Caleb Farmer hit a home run to left center giving the Mavericks a ten run lead.

Even though the baseballs were flying out of Suplizio, base hits also helped the Mavericks get the job done at the plate.

Junior first baseman Jordan Stubbings collected two RBIs off of a single through the right side in the second that Garner and freshman second baseman Johnathan Gonzalez scored on in the second. In the same inning, junior outfielder Johnny Carr reached on a dropped fly ball by the Cowboy’s second baseman. The error allowed another Maverick runner to touch home.

Farmer came up to the plate with runners on the corners and doubled to right field allowing Stubbings to score.

Bramwell had five RBIs on the night as he finished going 3-3 at the plate scoring four runs. Stubbings followed Bramwell in RBIs on the night as he finished with three.

NMHU tried to get something going but could not touch sophomore right-handed pitcher Andrew Morris.

The Mavericks continued to do damage in the batters box as they had 16 hits against five different pitchers. They also were able to take advantage of three errors and four walks. NMHU also gave the Mavericks two free base runners as they hit two CMU batters.

Morris got the start for the Mavericks as he continued to dominate on the mound. Even though he ran into some jams along the way he was able to get out of it and get through six innings of work. He only allowed one run, walked one batter and struck ten Cowboy batters out.

He trusted the defense he had behind him while he pitched one ground out and seven fly outs.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Jared Ure finished things off in relief. Ure pitched three innings and was able to strike out five but walked two batters.

CMU continues their series with NMHU tomorrow as they will play at doubleheader at Suplizio field starting at 1 p.m.
