Mavericks improve to 3-1

Junior left-handed pitcher Ryan Day dominated in his first start of the season and led Colorado Mesa University (CMU) to a win.

The Mavericks hoped to find a win against Northwest Nazarene (NNU) after a big loss on Opening Day. Everything worked in CMU’s favor this time around as they won 4-0

Day would be handed the ball to face a very aggressive Nighthawks lineup. Day completely dominated and threw a complete game.

Throughout the day the Prosper, TX. native, only had five hits, three walks and eight strikeouts. Day did a good job of mixing up his pitches and mixing up his tempo but still commanding the zone.

The Mavericks continued to find success at the plate with eight hits off of three NNU pitchers. Starting pitcher Sasha Jabusch only went four innings and gave up four runs to the Mavericks but he would also be able to strike out six batters.

All of CMU’s runs would come against Jabusch.

The Mavericks had a big fourth inning in scoring three of their four runs. Junior third baseman Caleb Farmer started things off by hitting a double to left center field to score junior first baseman Jordan Stubbings.

The next batter up was junior shortstop Chase Hamilton. On a 2-2 count Hamilton singled to left field allowing Farmer to easily score.

Junior outfielder Matt Turner was still looking for his first hit of the day when he stepped up to the plate in the fourth. On the first pitch, Turner made contact on the first pitch he saw and hit a homerun to center field giving the Mavericks a 4-0 lead.

The Mavericks would score again in the seventh inning when sophomore outfielder Conrad Villafuerte bunted down the third base line. Sophomore designated hitter Haydn McGeary got out at second as the catcher was able to throw the ball to the shortstop just in time. Turner would score on the play.

With the win over the Nighthawks the Mavericks move to 3-1 to start off their season. They look to continue their success on the road next weekend.

CMU will play in Alamosa, CO. against Adams State in a four game series starting on Friday March 5.
