The Mavericks finish the regular season with a sweep of Colorado Christian University (CCU) at home.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) started the series with another pitching clinic performed by sophomore right-handed pitcher Andrew Morris. Morris went eight innings while having 13 strikeouts and only giving up five hits and one unearned run.

This was the sixth time this season he has 10 or more strikeouts in an appearance. He also has ten wins on the season.

Morris had run support up on the board as junior infielder Jordan Stubbings hit a two-run home run in the bottom half of the third inning. The Cougars responded in the fourth as Blake Mattey scored on a fielding error by junior third baseman Caleb Farmer.

Junior Johnny Carr had two runs batted in (RBI) for his team as he singled in the fourth allowing freshman infielder Harrison Rodgers to score. He later hit a solo home run to allow the Mavericks their fourth and final run of the game.

On deck for Friday was a double header for the two teams as CCU tried to find ways to score against the Mavericks.

CCU was only able to score nine runs total though over the four games.

In game one of Friday’s doubleheader, the Mavericks produced their 10 games where they scored 20 or more runs.

Sophomore catcher Haydn McGeary hit a pair of home runs as his first home run was a rocket to right field in the first inning. Senior outfielder Tyler Parker came around to score on the play. McGeary’s second home run of the game was another two-run home run to give CMU a 7-1 lead.

McGeary’s home runs were his only two hits of the game as he scored three times and had four RBIs.

The Mavericks had four players have more than two hits in the game. Junior infielder Chase Hamilton had two hits as he tripled in the third inning allowing Rodgers to score. Then he doubled down the left field line in the fifth scoring Rodgers and junior infielder Connor Shadroo.

Rodgers also had a two hit game as he scored three times for CMU as well. Senior designated hitter Tanner Rempel had a successful game at the plate as he went 2-4 with three runs scored and one RBI as he homered on a 3-1 count in the sixth.

Leading the Mavericks in hits for game one was Parker as he led off for the Mavericks. He went 4-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored; he also struck out in the game.

CCU’s starting pitcher Justin Kiedinger did not make it out of the second inning as he allowed seven hits, six runs on 35 pitches with one strikeout.

Junior left-handed pitcher Ryan Day improved to 7-0 on the season as he went five innings of the seven inning contest. He struck out three, walked one, allowed four hits and three runs during his outing.

The nightcap sealed the deal for the Mavericks winning the series as they turned to another left handed pitcher in freshman Kannon Handy. Handy went five innings and struck out seven Cougars while walking one and giving up one run on two hits.

Freshman and junior right handed pitchers Cade Nicol and Garrett Tisdall threw the final two innings for the Mavericks. They combined for one strikeouts, three earned runs and four hits.

Junior outfielder Matt Turner also hit two home runs in this game. His first home run of the game came in the second inning giving the Mavericks a 6-0 lead. A two run home run scored Parker giving the Mavericks a nice 8-1 lead.

Rempel and Hamilton also recorded more RBIs this game as each drove in one run.

The Mavericks closed out the series with CCU on Saturday as they were able to win 11-1.

The fireworks started early as Parker hit an inside the park home run to center field to start the game off. He then would hit it over the wall for his second home run of the afternoon in the third inning and Hamilton would score on the run.

Stubbings hit his second home run of the weekend in the fourth following McGeary’s third home run of the weekend in the third inning.

The Mavericks scored 11 runs on 14 hits while having only one error in the field.

Senior right-handed pitcher Trevin Reynolds got the start in the final regular season game of the season and had a solid start. He went six innings before handing the ball over to the bullpen.  He was able to strike out five batters giving up six hits and one run.

The three relievers the Mavericks used Saturday afternoon combined for zero hits, zero runs, one walk and five strikeouts in three innings pitched.

CMU ends the season 37-3 overall on the season and will host the RMAC tournament starting May 19. The Mavericks will open the tournament with CCU starting at 2 p.m. on Suplizio Field.
