The Colorado Mesa baseball team split a doubleheader today against the UCCS Mountain Lions.
The Mountain Lions took game one by a score of 6-5 while the Mavericks bounced back in game two 8-0.
Game One
Chris Ramirez pitched the first game for the Mavericks. He lasted 4.2 innings before being relieved by AJ Landis.
Ramirez struck out seven batters and gave up six runs with only two of them being earned.
The Mavericks struck first when they went up 2-0 in the 1st inning on a PJ Gonzalez two RBI double that scored Garrett Ball and Kyle Serrano. Another run was added in the third inning when Ball doubled in Serrano to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Mountain Lions got two runs back in the bottom of the third when Zach Hall took Ramirez deep with a two-run homer.
The Mavericks tallied another run in the top of the 5th only to see it be relinquished in the bottom half as UCCS added four more runs. Three of those came on a single play where three runs scored on a throwing error by center fielder Bligh Madris. The next run came on a throwing error by Ball giving the Lions a 6-4 lead.
Kevan Elcock doubled in the sixth to drive home Andrew Contreras to make the score 6-5.
Cam Auferheide received the victory for the Mountain Lions as he pitched 1.1 innings while Colin Pratt recorded his second save of the season while pitching the last 1.2 innings.
Game Two
Kyle Leahy took the mound for game two and made sure he didn’t have to give the ball to anyone else.
Leahy threw seven scoreless innings while picking up his fourth win of the season. Leahy only allowed five hits while striking out four.
Contreras put the Mavericks on top in the 1st inning when he doubled home JJ Carr. Serrano followed Contreras’ double with one of his own to put the Mavericks up 2-0. Gonzalez singled home Serrano and advanced to second on a throwing error setting up Keenan Eaton’s RBI single. After the 1st inning, the Mavericks were up 4-0.
The Mavericks would add four more runs before the end of the game, with runs coming from Eaton, Tyler Sandoval, Serrano and Gonzalez.
Leahy only needed 80 pitches to get through his seven innings of work while retiring nine of the last ten batters he faced.
Colorado Mesa improves to 13-6 (6-1 RMAC) while UCCS falls to 9-9 (4-3 RMAC) on the year. The two teams will face off one last time tomorrow with game four set to start at 12 p.m.
