Men’s Rugby is achieving never-before-seen heights. After dominating conference rival Montana State University (MSU), CMU prepared to battle Boise State University (BSU) for the High Peaks Conference championship. On Nov. 8, CMU beat the Broncos 61-14, claiming the title: Conference Champions.
CMU has never won the High Peaks Conference during 15s season, marking this a celebratory moment in rugby history. The week one National Collegiate Rugby “Top 20 Coaches Poll” ranked BSU at number three in the nation for DII and CMU at number 20. Before the Nov. 8 match, CMU was ranked number six and BSU dropped to number eight.
The week of Oct. 27, CMU began an expansion of the geo-exchange program to install eco-friendly heating, and one area under renovation for this project was the home rugby pitch. This led to CMU playing BSU at the Palisade Peach Bowl Fields.
“We overcame adversity with the field. Had to paint the lines the night before. The post came like 30 minutes before the kickoff, but hey, it worked out,” Jack Edwards said.
Rugby scored nine tries to BSU’s two during the game. Many were breakaways, but one in particular stood out. This is Lock Robert Hughes’ first season playing rugby. He had over a 40 meter try in the second half of the game—his first score ever.
“My head is killing me, but other than that, I feel great. I’m just happy we pulled through today and got the win,” Hughes said.
“Why juke when you can run right through them, dude?” Tight-head Prop Jack Goss added.

Team-captain Parker Norton said that hard work paid off when it came to their win. He mentioned that everyone on the team played their role well, resulting in the high-stakes win.
“Just thanks to the boys and coaches, family, friends and everything,” Norton said. “And thanks to God.”
Next up for Mesa Rugby is the Regional Tournament in Springfield, Missouri. The tournament will take place Nov. 21-23. CMU will play two games over the weekend. If they win Regionals, they will head to Houston, Texas for Nationals.
