The Colorado Mesa University baseball team opened up conference play with a win this afternoon against Colorado Christian University. The Mavericks exploded in the third inning scoring nine runs and batting around the entire lineup.
Garrett Ball lead the Mavericks on the day as he went 3-4 and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Ball hit his first home run of the year and tallied three RBIs in the win over the Cougars.
Tyler Day started on the mound for Colorado Mesa. Day worked quickly as he only needed 70 pitches to get through six innings of shutout baseball. He struck out three and only allowed four hits keeping the Cougars on their toes all evening.
JJ Carr recorded his second triple of the year and added a RBI. Andrew Contreras finished 2-3 and drove in three runs. PJ Gonzalez reached safely in all his at bats as he went 2-2 and walked once with two RBIs and two runs.
Day record his first win of the season improving to 1-2 on the year. The trio of Jarrett Bott, Taylor Prokopis and Matt Haggerty finished the last three innings of the game for the Mavericks.
The Cougars’ pitcher Alex Ginn was chased after two innings of work. He faced four batters in the 3rd inning before being pulled for Tyler Henning.
The Mavericks improved to 8-5 (1-0 RMAC) on the year while the Cougars fell to 6-9 (0-1 RMAC).
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow as part of a four-game series. The scheduled start time is set for 1:00 p.m. with the second game set to start right after.
