The Colorado Mesa University baseball team improved to 7-5 on the season after a win Saturday afternoon. The four-game series was split between teams as the Cal Baptist University Lancers won the first two, and the Mavericks won the next two.
Kyle Leahy gave the Mavericks a quality start as he went 7 innings pitched and only gave up one earned run on five hits. Leahy also added three strikeouts before being pulled for relief pitcher Jake Mielock. Mielock had a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th where he made quick work of the Lancers with only nine pitches. Eli Thornquist relieved Mielock and pitched the 9th inning.
Zach McLeod carried the offensive effort as finished the day 3-3 (2B) and four runs batted in. He struck first when he doubled down the left field line and drove in PJ Gonzalez and Will Dixon. He added another two RBIs in the 6th inning to give the Mavericks a final 10-1 lead.
Joining McLeod in offensive production was pinch hitter Garrett Ball who only received one at-bat, but made the most of it as he drove in two with a single.
Gonzalez scored three runs in aid to the offensive effort. Tyler Sandoval had the other two RBIs of the game as he doubled in the 6th inning and drove in Jake Druce and Kyle Serrano.
The Lancers were kept on their toes throughout the game as they couldn’t figure out Leahy. The Lancers grounded out 12 times with Leahy on the mound.
The Mavericks outhit the Lancers 11-5 while adding three extra base hits to the Lancers zero.
Colorado Mesa 7-5 (0-0) will return to action this upcoming weekend as they stay home and welcome the Colorado Christian Cougars for their opening Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series.
The series is set to begin Friday, March 3 at 3 p.m.
