Students come to Colorado Mesa University for multiple reasons, whether they are athletic, academic, or financial.
Tyler Sandoval, currently studying in the nursing program, was inspired to join the “Mavily” when found a chance to continue his baseball career at CMU. A red shirt junior but academic senior, Sandoval hurt his knee earlier last year. However, he still has a chance to continue his sport in the upcoming season.
“It’s just a phenomenal program, a very winning program,” Sandoval said. Along with baseball, Colorado Mesa University has 72 conference and regional titles, with newly renovated athletic equipment and offices. There are twelve athletic fields on campus, just enough to let every athlete have their own personal slice of heaven.
Bruno Juarez, originally from Meeker, Colo., chose CMU for its modern campus and architectural development. Grand Junction’s beautiful scenery, 300+ days of sunshine, and some of the best outdoor recreation in the country also contributed to Juarez’s decision.
For sophomore Maggie Sonmor, CMU is like a second home. Having grown up in Grand Junction all her life, choosing CMU was an easy decision. On campus, there is almost no one that Sonmor doesn’t know.
“I know most everyone on campus, which is really nice,” Sonmor said. Along with other students, she was awarded scholarships for her academic achievements. Her major is currently undeclared. Her father, now retired, used to teach in the marketing department on campus. As a result, Sonmor grew up a Maverick.
Junior Cambrain Camp, chose CMU for the science program. She is currently a double major, studying molecular biology and neurology.
“They have a nice science department, great for research,” Camp said. Not only did she choose CMU for its academics, but also for its location. Camp grew up in Grand Junction and loves the area too much to part with it.
As academic programs grow and facilities expand, CMU continues to draw greater numbers of students. Though the reasons that students attend CMU vary, these four students are satisfied with their choice to become part of the Maverick family.
