Arcadia was a complete waste of student fees, which was misused and mismanaged. Once known as The Point, over the summer this student hangout spot was renovated into Arcadia. Colorado Mesa University (CMU) took what used to be a great place for student engagement and completely downgraded it. Now it’s a cash grab for the school since they started charging for arcade games.
There have been so many negative changes in Arcadia. There used to be TVs and free gaming consoles for students to play with friends, but now they’re gone. CMU also did away with the projector, made it difficult to have open mic nights, started charging for games with no prizes and now the food is completely disgusting. I urge students to try it to see what I’m talking about.
These changes have de-incentivized students to hang out at what used to be a pretty cool spot. Other areas of CMU have been failing and do not have enough funding to ensure student success. It doesn’t make sense to sink money into something seemingly frivolous when housing and academics clearly need it more.
I do not understand why students’ input was not considered or implemented when the decision was made to renovate. If the games are going to cost money, CMU should offer rewards for playing them. Something like “Mav Coins” that could be redeemed at shops around the school, in the vending machines or at least for food and drinks in Arcadia itself.
I want a space created to bring back open mic night. I want the TVs and gaming consoles brought back. I want better food. In my time spent studying at Arcadia, I’ve noticed far less students hanging out since the renovation. I think the changes are to blame for that.
Even with its issues, I will say that the level of care toward the students from staff working in Arcadia is phenomenal. It feels like they truly care about the students. Now, this is the only reason I have to visit. The staff have created a warm and welcoming environment.
I do not understand why students’ input was not considered or implemented when the decision was made to renovate, but I believe that CMU can fix this failed project. However, they need to listen to the concerns and voices of students. After all, the space is for students.
