The Mavericks open their spring break trip to Florida with a 14-10 win over the Sailfish.
Redshirt senior attackman Carson Schwark scored a game-high four goals on seven shots. Redshirt sophomore midfielder James Steinke chipped in with a hat-trick and recorded one assist as well.
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) went 18 of 28 at the faceoff x as sophomore faceoff man Dylan Checketts dominated winning 17 faceoffs. He picked up eight ground balls and dished out one assist in the game.
Redshirt sophomore attackman/midfielder AJ Switzer got the Mavericks off to a fast start scoring in the opening two minutes of the game. Schwark followed it up with his first goal of the game with 12:36 left in the first quarter to put CMU up 2-0.
Austin Evans answered with his first goal of the quarter for Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) with 7:48 left in the first quarter.
The Mavericks answered with another two-goal run to go up 4-1 four minutes later. Evans recorded his second goal of the quarter with 10 seconds remaining in the first to bring PBA within two points.
Both teams traded a goal to open the second quarter, and the Maverick’s lead remained at two points.
Redshirt sophomore Trent Pernell scored the only goal that came from a man-up opportunity with 10:37 left in the quarter. Pernell’s goal started a four-goal run for the Mavericks as they took a 9-3 lead with 1:58 left in the first half.
Henry Sloyan ended the CMU run with a goal of his own with 53 seconds remaining in the second quarter to go into the halftime break down by five.
The Sailfish opened the quarter with a two-goal run to open the third quarter to bring themselves within three goals. Schwark ended PBA’s run with his third goal of the game which came off an assist from sophomore midfielder Trevor Nelson.
PBA scored two more goals in the quarter to outscore CMU four to one in the third quarter to cut the lead to 8-10.
The Maverick’s offense got back in rhythm in the fourth quarter as they opened with a two-game run to go up 12-8 with 12:14 left in the game. Dylan Insolia and Caleb Southard answered the Mavericks run with one of their own as they each put a shot in the back of the net to bring PBA back within two goals.
CMU got the final say as Steinke scored his third goal of the game with 4:04 left in the game to put the Mavericks up 13-10. Sophomore midfielder Sergio Pelayo recorded the final goal of the game with 2:41 left in the game off an assist from Steinke to put CMU up by four points.
Pelayo scored three points in the game with a goal and two assists in the game.
The Mavericks had 13 different players register at least one point in the game as they got everyone involved offensively. They assisted 10 of their 14 goals against the Sailfish.
The Maverick’s next game is Saturday, March 19 against the second-ranked team in the nation in the University of Tampa.
