The Mavericks beat the Cobras 21-5 in the final game of their three-game road trip to the south.
Sophomore attackman Hunter Holcomb and redshirt sophomore midfielder Trent Pernell scored four points in the game. Holcomb and Pernell had reversed stat lines as Holcomb scored one goal and three assists, while Pernell scored three goals and had one assist.
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) dominated the ground ball battle as they finished with a 48 to 24 advantage in the game. They controlled the faceoff x as they went 27 of 30 at the x.
Redshirt sophomore attackman Alex Blatt got the Mavericks on the board just 45 seconds into the game. Coker University (CU) held the Mavericks off the scoreboard for seven minutes before the Mavericks scored three consecutive goals to put them up 4-0 with 6:46 left in the first quarter.
Freshman midfielder Joey Grzetic IV got CMU’s offense going in the second quarter with 13:34 left in the first half as he buried a step-down shot. The Mavericks continued to execute at a high level as they scored four more goals by the 6:05 minute mark left in the first half to take a 9-0 lead.
Nathan Allen picked up a one-minute slashing penalty with 1:34 left in the first half of the game. Holcomb took advantage of the man-up opportunity as he stung a corner to score the final goal of the half for CMU and put them up 10-0.
CMU switched goaltenders at halftime as freshman Reece Sullivan played the first half and finished with five saves. Redshirt freshman goalie Mac Bayless was in the net for the second half for the Mavericks.
Freshman defender Caden Hathaway got CMU on the board first in the second half as they successfully cleared the ball, raced down the field and fired a shot into the net. It was Hathaway’s first collegiate goal of his career.
Redshirt sophomore midfielder Drew Eickelman scored the Mavericks 12 consecutive goals with 9:32 left in the third quarter before CU scored their first goal of the game.
The Cobras were able to find the back of the net twice in two minutes with their second goal of the game coming with 5:28 left in the third quarter. Freshman midfielder Gavin Wallace scored the second goal of his Maverick career with 2:38 left in the third quarter to put CMU up 14-2.
The Mavericks opened the fourth quarter with four consecutive goals to take a 19-2 lead with 11:41 left in the game. Both teams scored two consecutive goals to answer each other, and the Mavericks held a 21-4 lead with 3:13 left in the game.
Caden Gore scored the final goal of the game with 43 seconds left in the game off an assist from Ethan Ramsey.
Freshman midfielder/attackman JJ Brummett tied Pernell for the most goals scored by a Maverick with three goals. Brummet scored three of his four collegiate goals against the Cobras.
CMU outshot CU 62 to 19 and the Mavericks had 43 of their shots on goal.
The Maverick’s next game is Sunday, Feb. 27 at 12:00 p.m. against Westminster College in CMU’s home opener.
