Students gathered to present projects from a semesters worth of hard work at the 12th annual student showcase held on the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) campus.
The showcase included presentations, posters, exhibits, readings and demonstrations all done by students at CMU. It was spread throughout campus and featured a wide variety of majors displaying their work.
“This [was] my first year doing it and I think it’s [was] really well laid out and seemed like it [was] pretty popular, there’s been a lot of people and interest,” Ashley Tuttle, a senior in elementary education, said. “I picked a subject that was personal to me and something that we are going to see in the classroom with multiple kids throughout the years. [It was] nice to kind of show the importance of ADHD in students. I enjoyed it because I think it is a really important subject, especially for us who are going to be teachers, a lot of people have recognized it or can relate to it.”
The student showcase had a continuous steady stream of students that came to watch and support their peer’s work.
“It [was] really nice to see everything we have worked towards as a group from day one of this semester finally done and completed in a physical copy,” nursing major Cara Ufer said. “It [was] so nice to see and be able to appreciate what we have accomplished, and how much we’ve learned through it and see the same with everyone else.”
One of the commonalities between all the students presenting in the showcase was the excitement to show tangible evidence of their work for the first time. The students have been working on their projects for months, putting in the long hours, to finally be able and display all of their efforts to the school.
“It [was] different from what we are taught because everything’s theoretical, and when you finally get hands on, you run into problems you never expected and then you actually get there,” Garrett Schultz, a senior in the engineering program, said. “Its kind crazy because [before our project] was just a [Cartridge Actuated Devices] CAD drawing before, now it’s a full-scale thing that theoretically works.”
The student showcase has been a staple in the Maverick academic community and continues to grow each year. The various academic departments represented in the showcase displayed the variety that CMU has to offer and proudly showed off the work their students have done during the course of a semester.
“I love to perform and have people experience my work, along with my peers. We were able to flow through our performances and presentations at a great pace,” senior dance major Shelby Steele said. “It was nice to show others how we work in our department. I think showcase is super great for the university to give experiences to others on the versatility that this school has to offer.”
