The Public Relation (PR) Club is hosting Media day in Escalante to introduce undeclared majors to what the mass communications program has to offer.
In the past Media day was open to high schoolers to come and get an introduction to Mass Communications classes. However, because of COVID that has changed.
“It’s just going to be open to CMU students. We want it to be a recruitment kind of event for Mass Communications, and it’s for students who are looking into the department or maybe who are undeclared. But it can also be for Mass Communications majors who maybe want to come network with some of our alumni and find an internship,” Junior Mass Communications major and PR Club Vice President Ashley Andrews said.
A panel of professors from the Mass Communications department will talk in 30 minute intervals about the classes they teach. Students will be able to ask questions and get more information about paths to go with mass communications during this time.
Other aspects of media day include alumni using Zoom to attend and answer student questions along with a couple of raffles throughout the day.
“Then we’re going to have a little carnival at the end of the night. We’re going to have certain Mass Communication clubs and eSports all have their own booths, and then we’re gonna have food and we’re gonna have a couple of giveaways too,” Andrews said.
KMSA will be the DJs for the event, as well as running a game at the carnival portion of the event. Other organizations like CMU-TV and Horizon Magazine will also be running carnival games in the evening.
This will be an opportunity to introduce new students to the clubs and the experiences that media orgs on campus can bring them.
For the leaders of these clubs, participating in media extracurriculars has brought them friends and practical work experience that they can use on their resume.
“It’s just it’s a good experience. It’s a fun experience the people in the staff are all fun and witty. There’s a lot of crossover between org so if you’re within The Crite, or CMU-TV, or Horizon, most likely you’re going to be working with the same people because a lot of our media orgs have crossover,” Mass Communications Senior and general manager of KMSA Jerry Peralta said.
Media day will take place on April 19 from 3 to 8 p.m. in Escalante.
