The Mavericks are in the hunt.
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Women’s Golf Team finished day one of The Swan Memorial in third place. They ended 21 over par with a score of 309, just three strokes behind the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in second.
Sophomore Crystle Querol is tied for the lead with a team-leading score of 73, tying her career-best. Querol is tied with Westminster College’s (WC) Cailyn Clayton as Clayton helped lead the Griffins to the top spot.
Graduate student Randi Kim and Querol tied for a team and tournament-high three birdies.
Redshirt sophomore Elly Walters had a score of 75 in her tournament debut for women’s golf. Walters is currently tied for fourth in the tournament after day one and sits two shots outside of first.
Graduate student Hannah More ended the day tied for 15 as she was eight shots over par.
All five of the Maverick golfers finished in the top third of the 63-player field.
Freshman Sadie Kelly is the lone Maverick competing as an individual. She finished day one tied for 29 place as she ended with a score of 86 in her collegiate debut.
CMU is chasing the Griffins as four of the WC golfers had a score under 80.
The Mavericks continue the final day of The Swan Memorial at 9 a.m. on Sept. 15.
