Valentine’s Day is coming up, so we interviewed Colorado Mesa University students and asked them for their favorite love songs and their favorite anti-love songs. Here they are, compiled into a playlist for the season.
“A Thousand Years” by Cristina Perri is freshman Makenzie Crawford’s favorite love song.
“It really speaks to me and it was one of my friend’s mom’s wedding song,” Crawford said.
“Love Song” by Sara Bareilles is Crawford’s favorite anti-love song.
“Its very sassy and I like that,” Crawford said.
“Bubbly” by Colbie Caillat is freshman Ceona Bennet’s favorite love song.
“It’s got good vibes to it and good memories tied to it,” Bennet said.
“Falling” by Harry Styles is Bennet’s favorite anti-love song.
“It’s really easy to relate to and the music you can really get into and relax to it and feel everything at once,” Bennet said.
“Good as You” by Kane Brown is freshman Alex Stucker favorite love song.
“It makes me think about this girl that’s really nice and has a good soul and spirit,” Stucker said.
“Breakup in a Small Town” by Sam Hunt is Stucker’s favorite anti-love song.
“It reminds me of a situation that’s ongoing right now,” Stucker said.
“Last First Kiss” by One Direction is freshman Gabe Simon’s favorite love song.
“We recently watched the One Direction documentary and I thought it was a good song,” Simon said.
“Molly” by Lil Dicky is Simon’s favorite anti-love song.
“They were playing it at work and it made me think of my friends and moving on from high school,” Simon said.
“Heaven can Wait” by Michael Jackson is freshman Evani Gomez’s favorite love song.
“It absolutely sounds gorgeous instrumentally and the lyrics basically is him talking about [how] he’s not ready to go to heaven without his love,” Gomez said. “He just doesn’t want to be away from her even if [he’s] dead.”
“I been” by Ari Lennox is Gomez’s favorite anti-love song.
“It’s just talking about what she’s doing to cope with the breakup and with the heartbreak, and just like kind of warning younger girl [not to] really get into dating until you’re at an older age because as we all know, it can be very mentally challenging to put yourself in situations like that,” Gomez said.
“Slow Dancing in the Dark” by Joji is freshman Niah Gass’s favorite love song.
“He’s basically saying [that] the person he loves makes him have that feeling of wanting to slow dance in the dark [and] be wrapped around in their vibe and their energy and just be embraced by and just dance with you,” Gass said. “And so I don’t know, I really feel like that’s what the love of my life makes me feel.”
“At Least an M” by Gucci Name is Gass’s favorite anti-love song.
“He says, ‘my associates have associates that have at least an M,’ And I was like, ‘that’s a mood.’ I’m not [going to] associate with people who aren’t on the same level as me emotionally and just on my same vibe,” Gass said.
