The festival was as well done as the steak.
For years, Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) wrestling program has hosted the annual Steak and Crab Fest to raise supplemental funds for their program. This last Saturday, Sept. 21, they hosted another one in Lincoln Park.
Sponsored by Bank of Colorado, the event offered all you can eat steak, crab and beer for $65. There was food and entertainment, with music provided by FC Westcott and the Aficionados. The food was cooked by men and women of the CMU wrestling program, and the money raised went to support Maverick athletes.
The Mizushima family has been a proud supporter and volunteer for the event since its second year. Lori and Ryan Mizushima help with the behind-the-scenes logistics in planning and executing the event.
“Ryan, my brother, had the opportunity to further his education through wrestling by wrestling in college on scholarship. We feel that wrestling is a sport that requires strong work ethic and self-discipline that can contribute to success in future careers and life,” Lori Mizushima said. “There is also a lot of camaraderie and strong relationships that are built in the wrestling community. We want to be able to help athletes further their education and become successful in their life after college.”
CMU Wrestling head coach Chuck Pipher was appreciative of the support. “We benefit tremendously from all the fundraising we do. We don’t have to skimp too much on things, we’re able to put people in hotel rooms and able to do what we want to in order to run a good program. It’s mainly just for our regular budget.”
When asked what the most rewarding part of the fundraiser is, Mizushima stated, “I appreciate the opportunity to help grow a fundraiser and contribute to the success of the Wrestling Program at CMU. We’ve grown this event from 50 attendees to well over 600.
“The support that the community individuals and businesses show for the program is heartwarming. This event also provides all of us wrestling supporters a chance to gather in support of the same cause. It’s a really fun day!”
