The Plaza at Colorado Mesa University was a busy place for much of Friday afternoon and evening. While the Genders and Sexualities Alliance and the Black Student Alliance tie-dyed t-shirts in the field in front of Dominguez Hall, the Society of Physics Students (SPS) operated a boom lift to drop eggs from a great height.
The event was SPS’s annual egg drop. Middle and high school students gathered from the surrounding areas. They made capsules for eggs with the objective to protect them as they fell onto the concrete below.
The day’s events included a tour through Confluence Hall, as well as scientific demonstrations during breaks from dropping eggs.
A fire show took place during one demonstration using butane and plastic bottles.
During another break, temperature and pressure were demonstrated with a 55 gallon drum, in which cold water rapidly cooled the metal and caused it to implode.
