Winter Wonderland

It's That Time Of Year

On the last design meeting of the semester with The Criterion on Sunday, Sept. 2, I wanted to walk in and ask everyone “What is that white stuff falling from the sky?” For some reason I failed to ask it. I just seemed to keep getting up and looking out the window. Grand Junction was receiving a good dusting of snow that day. For many, it was long overdue.

Although there are a lot of people who say they could do without the snow, for just as many it brings a real sense of happiness and a realization that the holidays are upon us. The more snow that we get, the better the activities often get. For those that really enjoy the snow, it is a win-win situation.

I asked quite a few students how they felt about winter being here and whether or not they are enjoying the snow or dreading winter. With those that I have asked, it is a clear consensus that they are happy that winter is finally here.

Mikayla Brewer, a junior, said “I LOVE the snow! I wish it snowed more here honestly. I think snow is the closest thing we have in this world to magic. It makes everything so quiet and peaceful and fun!”

“I am very excited about the snow. It always makes me excited to go home and bundle myself up in blankets with some hot cocoa. It also makes me feel happy because it means it’s usually somewhere around December, and I love December because there are a lot of holidays in this month (I celebrate ‘Giftsevening’ on December 5th, a Dutch Saint Nicholas holiday, then there’s Christmas and then there’s New Years Eve). And it looks pretty, so that’s a plus,” said Mirthe Levels, International Student and writer for The Criterion.

“I have been really excited to see the amount of snow that we have already gotten this year. The skiing is as good this early in the year as it ever got last season. I am excited to shred it up and get some good photos along the way,” said Alex Richards, a Junior. He even referenced his Instagram page, @alex_ventures, where he puts up photos and videos of his skiing.

Megan Hunter, a senior said, “I grew up in Colorado and every time it snows I love it! It brings back so many memories for me growing up and just being with my family. I love going up the mountain and sledding with friends. It’s my favorite time of the year!”

For me, I love it! Christmas day is just not complete without any snow. After the scorching hot summer we had, this was a welcomed sight. It has made it feel more in the spirit of the holiday season. After living in South Florida for over ten years with it being in the high 80’s and 90’s with extremely high humidity practically all year long, I longed for seeing the changing seasons and the winter snow.

For now, I welcome winter and all the snow and festivities that come along with it. So I say, “Bring on the snow! Let’s have a fun and eventful white Christmas!”
