Winter is coming… to CMU

Gear up for the cold months ahead

While the leaves are still green, that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start stockpiling sweaters, drinking hot chocolate, or hoarding frozen pizzas and ramen so you don’t have to brave the cold just to run to the grocery store. After all, it never hurts to be prepared.

Ned Stark might have only been right about one thing: winter is definitely coming. Just be glad it doesn’t last for years in Grand Junction.

Despite the fact that we live in Colorado, where winter is perhaps the most beautiful season, many people find themselves dreading everything about these colder months, except the Christmas season. However, winter is really just an underappreciated season. There’s lots of ways to enjoy the upcoming cold, whether you brave it for outdoor activities or stay inside with hot chocolate and movies.

To prepare for everyone’s favorite chilly season, here’s a couple of tips:

Buy your ski pass now. Or at least some tickets, even if you have to eat just rice and beans for a couple weeks to scrape together the money. Without winter hobbies, what’s the point of making it ‘till spring?

If you can’t stand the cold, start your list of shows to binge watch. Are you still watching? Yes. Yes, I am.

Perfect your tinder game, start going out or slide into those DMs. You’ve only got a few months left before you’re going to want to find a permanent bed-warmer, or at least someone to cuddle with while you’re actually watching Netflix.

Accept that you will always have that one roommate who swears they can’t sleep unless the house is less than 65 degrees.

Remind yourself constantly you could live on the east coast, where winters involve ice storms. Or you could live up in Washington, where winter isn’t constantly sunny like it is here. Wait for those bizarre 60-degree January days. They will come.

Never, ever be ashamed of how many sweaters you own (or wear) at a time.

No matter how tempting it may seem after a freezing walk across campus, don’t fall victim to the winter line of Starbucks drinks. No one needs that much sugar in their bloodstream.

Enjoy not having to shave every other day, or wash your hair as much. Winter hats can cover up those greasy locks, and pants can hide those legs you probably should have shaved last week.

Whatever you do, don’t think about summer. Don’t think about the beach or swimming or how pale you’ve gotten so pale from watching way, way too much Netflix.

How ever you decide to spend your winter, don’t forget that all good (or bad) things come to an end. Soon enough, it’ll be spring and you’ll no longer have that nice excuse of how it’s just “too cold” or “too icy” to go outside for a run or bike ride. Enjoy the winter months; with some of these tips, you may find they’re more than bearable.
