Music is everywhere: in our cars, at our dances, at our parties and even just in our earbuds walking to and from class. It is one of the defining aspects of cultures across the world. Different songs and artists work to fabricate a soundtrack that is unique and personal to each of our lives.
The Criterion has started a new project to build a playlist, courtesy of our editors. Each issue, a different editor will be featured in a piece in which they will describe a song that’s really hitting home for them at that moment. The hope is to get a glimpse, however small, into the diversity that makes up the Criterion team.
This issue’s feature is pre-nursing student Sierra Angel. She holds the position of Photo Editor, in which she is responsible for acquisition and editing of the photos that appear within the pages of our newspaper.
“Angeleyes” by ABBA is the song she chose to spotlight for this piece. Sierra first heard “Angeleyes” on TikTok and it then later resurfaced in her recommended videos on YouTube. Being a huge fan of “Mamma Mia!,” she says “it’s had [her] in a chokehold recently.” When asked what draws her to this song, Angel replied: “I love the vibe of it. I love listening to it. It’s a good song for me to also just belt out and get my emotions out.”
Music can be so incredibly helpful when it comes to maintaining emotional health and this editor has found her “comfort song.” The lyrics are what mean the most to her about this track, especially those found within the chorus. “It gets to that part and I’m like, oh, this is so good,” says Angel.
