Sodexo Rebrand Review

The school cafeteria, known as the Caf, underwent major changes in layout and overall feel, in addition to satellite dining locations; so, I reviewed the recent rebrands Sodexo made to some of the dining options on campus.

Firstly, the serving area in the Caf was remodeled over the summer, leading to a cleaner, more open look. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of options I had when inspecting each of the serving stations.

The workers were friendly, and the food was enjoyable. They also changed how they do to-go orders this semester. Instead of a styrofoam box, students are now given an eco-friendly “Green To-Go Box”.

Students with a meal plan were given a key fob upon check-in that can be exchanged for the box.  While there is a $2 replacement fee for lost boxes or fobs, I am able to use a paper boat alternative if I wish. This shows Sodexo listening to student demands for “greener” policies on campus.

Compared to last year, it is clear the Caf made positive changes that benefit the main student dining experience.

In addition to all this, Tomlinson Library rebranded both of their retail dining options, outside of Einstein’s Bagels which stayed the same. Tres Habaneros was transformed into Picante’s, and Pandini’s into What The Mav? (WTM?).

While Picante’s mostly stayed the same, I was disappointed to see that some of the exclusive ingredients from last year had been removed, such as brown rice and a couple of meat options. The food, however, was just as enjoyable as before despite the absence of options.

WTM? is a new concept Sodexo created to spark up change in the Tomlinson Library, where the themed dishes cross-cultural categories every three and a half weeks. To start the year, students were treated with a macaroni and cheese theme which featured different sorts of pasta, meats, and cheeses. It was some of the most enjoyable food on campus.

More recently, WTM? began serving their second thematic dish of the year, stir fry. I liked the different meat, vegetables, and spices available, and overall, I am in favor of the changes made at the library.

With all this in mind, Sodexo additionally rebranded its coffee and deli station in Houston Hall. Take5 is a mini-version of the convenience store Rowdy’s in the University Center, meant for quick “on-the-go” snacks for busy students.

To be honest, I was the least excited about this change when I heard Sodexo was replacing the former Starbucks in Houston. After I went there, however, I now have mixed feelings.

Take5 has an assortment of pastries, snacks, coffee, and refrigerated drinks. While it is convenient to quickly grab a snack before or after class, I miss the variety of drinks and freshly baked foods from Starbucks.

Take5 lacks some of the likable qualities of its former brand like hot soup and pre-made sandwiches, which Take5 could address by adding more quality snacks.

Overall, it is obvious Sodexo rebranded with students’ considerations at the forefront. The Caf is aesthetically pleasing and now 100% styrofoam-free. Picante’s and WTM? bring some much-needed excitement to the Tomlinson Library’s dining options. Take 5 is a convenient location for a quick refreshment.

Sodexo appreciates student feedback; if you have any suggestions, please express them through the comment cards found at every campus dining establishment. Additionally, supervisors are more than willing to listen to student’s concerns.
