The roar of the crowd, fans shouting from everywhere around you and celebrating big plays with your friends.
One of my favorite parts of high school was going to the games with my friends and standing in the student section. Personally, I wasn’t the biggest fan of all the cheers, but my friends and I loved to talk trash to everyone.
The college students are just flat out better in my opinion. The cheers that occur are usually pretty basic and happen in key moments like they are supposed to. The thing that makes it great is the fact that everyone in the student section is there to see the incredible talent on display.
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) boasts some of the best sports teams in the nation that consistently find themselves in the top 25. They also consistently compete for Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Championships in every sport.
Undoubtedly, this is due to the incredible talent I listed above. I like to believe that the community’s support has a little something to do with their successes. The men’s basketball team has won back-to-back RMAC Championships, and the community has backed them through it all.
The community’s support of CMU Athletics is one of my favorite parts of the events because it truly makes the events special. The community shows up at every event and cheers their hearts out because the teams matter dearly to them.
It may not be how the community and alumni show up for major universities like CU, but our community members make it feel like it.
The community’s consistent support is what makes the games special. They always show up to the games no matter the sport and cheer their hearts out for their Mavericks. No matter if you are a diehard sports fan, a casual sports fan, supporting a friend or out with your friends, you will have fun.
You don’t have to be a diehard sports fan to enjoy the sporting events here on campus. Just tagging along to the game with your friends will make any night better, and will have you guys reminiscing on those memories all the time.
The halftime entertainment is exceptional at the sporting events the Maverick Stampede, the marching band and the Mavettes all provide great entertainment for the CMU fans. The incredible dance and cheer teams that we have provide pregame and halftime entertainment for everyone.
If you are just looking for something to do during the week or on weekends, sporting events are a great option. It’s a great place to meet new people and it gives you an opportunity to get out of your dorm room.
The environment inside Stocker Stadium is going to be electric this season. We are getting back to a normal football schedule, and I expect the fans to go all out this year and have Stocker rocking all season long.
Tailgating will be allowed this year before football games again. This is always a great option for you and your friends before going to enjoy the football game. This is a winning recipe for this season.
I can’t begin to tell you the number of games that I’ve seen be decided by the last possession no matter the sport. We had multiple RMAC Championship games that went to overtime here on campus which were must-see events.
The Men’s Basketball RMAC Championship against Colorado School of Mines is one of those instant classics. It was a 75-74 overtime thriller that lives rent-free in my head, and I truly am sad that fans couldn’t have been in attendance for it because Brownson Arena would’ve been going crazy.
Whether you are a diehard fan or not, CMU has the sport for you.
