Sophomore right handed pitcher Andrew Morris led the Mavericks to a win over the Orediggers.

Morris got the ball for Colorado Mesa University(CMU) in the first game of a four game set against Colorado School of Mines (CSM).

During the first inning, Morris struck out the first two batters of the game before Wyane Moeck reached first on a throwing error by junior shortstop Chase Hamilton. He then advanced to third on a throwing error by Morris.

Danny McDermott then walked after battling Morris to a 3-2 count. Those would be the last two batters Morris allowed until the fourth inning.

He only allowed five hits through seven innings of work and only allowed the Orediggers only . Morris struck out 13 which is a session high through his three appearances. He also only allowed two walks.

After Morris was taken out of the game, freshman right-handed pitcher Jared Ure came in to pitch the eighth. He only allowed one hit through the inning. Junior right-handed pitcher Anthony Durbano came in to close things out for the Mavericks and struckout one and allowed one hit.

The Mavericks continued to find success at the plate as well.

In the second inning, CMU crossed the plate five times to give them a 5-0 lead. Senior outfielder Tyler Parker got things started as he singled to right field. The next pitch junior third baseman Caleb Farmer laid down a bunt right on the third base side and was successful.

With two runners now on, junior shortstop Chase Hamilton would bunt as well on a 1-1 count. The bases were then loaded for senior second baseman Blaine Demello who hit a RBI single to right field and the Mavericks were on the board first.

The scoring continued as sophomore outfielder Tanner Garner grounded into a double play. Even though Garner and Demello were out, Farmer was able to score on the play.

Sophomore designated hitter Haydn McGeary continued his success at the plate with an RBI double as Hamilton scored. Junior catcher Spencer Bramwell then singled through the left side as McGeary and junior outfielder Matt Turner scored.

CMU did not score again until the fourth inning as Turner hit a homerun into the left field bleachers. That was not the only home run hit by Turner this game, in the sixth he hit a two run home run that scored Demello as well.

CMU and CSM will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1 p.m in Grand Junction, Colo.
