The Mavericks fall in Denver

The Mavericks fall 2-14 in their opening game of the season against Regis University.

The Mavericks lost big in Denver, Colo. in their opening game of the season as they fell 2-14 to the Rangers.  

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) came into the game as the 25 ranked teams in the nation. The Rangers were ranked 12 in the nation as they came into the game with a 3-1 record. 

Regis University (RU) caused 22 of the Maverick’s 27 turnovers in the game. The Rangers also shot the ball 27 times and they got 20 of those shots on goal.

Senior attacker Kenzie Blackwell and sophomore midfielder Lauren Wick were the two players that scored for the Mavericks as they tallied one goal each 

Maddie Northcut got RU on the board first with 27:48 left in the first half. Northcut’s goal gave the Rangers set them off on a scoring run that allowed them to take control of the game.  

The Rangers jumped out to a big lead in the first half as they were up 8-0 with 9:01 left in the first half. Wick got the Mavericks on the board with 6:17 left in the first half, but it was the only goal CMU scored in the first half.  

Andrea Macalalad scored the final goal of the half to push the Rangers lead back up to eight points going into halftime.  

Kyleigh Peoples got RU on the board first in the second half and the goal marked Peoples’ 14 goal of the season.  

RU opened the second half on a four-goal scoring run as they increased their lead to 13-1. Blackwell ended the Rangers run as she was able to put a shot in the back of the net off a free-position shot.  

Macalalad scored her 11 goal of the season as she put RU up by 12 points with 5:27 remaining in the game.  

Both teams played two goalies in the game, and each team finished the game with six saves.  

Macalalad led the game in scoring with four goals and one assist.  

CMU’s next game is Saturday, March 12 against Colorado College at 1 p.m. in Colorado Springs, Colo.
