Mental health on campus

It’s that time of year again. The time when students are pulling all-nighters, skipping meals and generally pushing their bodies and minds to the limit.

It’s also the time of year when mental health problems can flare up or become exacerbated. If you’re struggling to cope with the stress of college finals, it’s important to reach out for help.

Mental health is an important issue for college students. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in four students has a mental health condition. That means that mental health is a concern on every college campus.

There are a number of reasons why mental health is a problem for college students. The stress of college can be overwhelming. Students are often away from home for the first time, and may feel isolated. They may be juggling a full course load with a job and other activities. They may also be facing financial pressures.

All of these factors can lead to mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression and eating disorders. These issues can impact a student’s ability to succeed in college.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) is taking steps to address mental health on campus. The university recently completed the Healthy Minds Checklist posed by the Colorado Department of Higher Education during the 2021-2022 school year. The process included looking at mental health resources on campus and comparing them to the checklist, then establishing anything extra the checklist required. CMU did this of their own volition and in the process earned a Hunger Free designation as well. This is a good step, but more needs to be done.

The university should make sure that there are enough counselors available to students. Many students can face long wait times when attempting to receive therapy on campus. It is essential to make those resources readily available, especially since off-campus sessions can rack up costs quickly, even with insurance.

CMU is on the right track when it comes to mental health. By taking action to address the issue, the university is sending a message that it cares about its students.

There are a number of resources available on campus, such as counseling services, that can help people get through tough times. There are also organizations like NAMI on campus that work to spread awareness about mental health and provide support.

Along with those options, students should also focus on having a support system in their life. Having understanding friends, family and even fellow students can be the difference you may need to get through college.

Don’t be afraid to reach out for help if you’re feeling overwhelmed, and be sure to make time for yourself amid the chaos. Remember, you’re not alone and there are people who can help you get through this.
