The Colorado Mesa University Costume Shop and the Mesa Thespian Society recently held a Halloween costume sale in the lobby of the Moss Performing Arts Center in front of Robinson Theatre. The sale went from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday Oct. 17 and Thursday Oct. 18. The sale was not only open to students, but it was also open to the public.

The Costume Shop regularly makes costumes for the theatre department as well as accepting many items that get donated. As their inventory fills up, the costume sale is not only a prefect way to make room for new items, but it also provides an amazing selection of outfits for everyone. With Halloween right around the corner, this was the perfect time to hold the sale.

Planning a sale of this size however, is not an easy task. “We wanted it to be super organized this year,” Heidi Snider, a senior studying musical theatre said, “We’ve probably been working on it for about two or three weeks now.”

This is not the first time that the Costume Shop and the Mesa Thespian Society have teamed up and held a costume sale. Jill Van Brussel, Assistant Professor Theatre Arts said, “We have been doing [this sale] for about four or five years.”

Although they did not hold a costume sale last year, this year’s sale came with a bunch of new and exciting items.

“We have hats and wigs, we have everything from capes to full show girl costumes” Van Brussel said “[We have] all kind of sort of weird and wonderful stuff.”

Most of the items for sale were only a few dollars to the most expensive being around $20. Not only does the Halloween costume sale help the Theatre get rid of their extra inventory, but all the proceeds go straight towards the CMU Theatre Arts Scholarship Fund.

“[The money] goes towards scholarship funds,” Snider said. “It’s just another way to give back to people who are going to school here.”

As the second day came to an end, the Costume Shop sold around a third of its inventory, and the CMU Theatre Arts Scholarship Fund gained around $800. Another costume sale was thought of and would go next Halloween; however, nothing is really planned at the moment.
