Flashback series thrills audience

Ever get that feeling deep down that can only be filled with a retro themed Sci-Fi thriller, phenomenal score, compelling story, actors and rich visuals? That’s a really specific feeling but fear not, “Stranger Things” is here to save the day. This Netflix Original Series has spread like wildfire across social media and for a good reason. Set in the 80’s, this thriller takes you on the horrifying journey of three boys trying to get their friend back after his disappearance.

It is really well done with nothing lacking. The five main characters are played well, especially for child actors, to go along with the rest of the cast. Every character feels real and gets enough depth to not be forgotten. Even the shop manager with a handful of appearances feels fleshed out.

The performances were no doubt helped by the phenomenal writing. In many ways it feels like what ‘Super 8’ should have been. That’s not just because of

the retro feel, both being set over 30 years ago, or the almost cliché plot of government experiment and cover up, but also because of the good flow and the story of “growing up.” It feels like it could have been a drawn out movie in the sense it could be cut to two and a half hours, but it is not drawn out. The pacing is slow at times but adds to the helplessness of the characters and how they are just sitting there and nothing can be done.

The season is a mere eight episodes long, but at an average

of 50 minutes a pop it is not the quickest to binge watch, but it is easy to do as the need to find out what happens just drives the need to continue.

The phenomenal original opening theme along with the rest of the sound track makes each episode just fly by, and at a nearly seven hour run time. But be warned: if used for Netflix and chill only Netflix may occur.

For a review this has been nothing but praise, and it deserves it. The only real criticisms it could be given is some of the props and songs don’t match the time, but that’s petty. Spoilers! It even avoids the cliché of matching the cute girl up with the nerdy guy, which goes along great with the characters and makes sense. So, like many other critics have rated it, “Stranger Things” gets a five out of five stars from me. Here’s hoping season two is just as good. Everyone misses you Barb.
