The esports team at Colorado Mesa University (CMU), CMU Mavs, had a Fortnite Tournament today, Feb. 7.

The tournament was originally supposed to be individual, but at the last minute it got switched to duo teams. Each school could enroll up to five players, but only three were allowed to compete together.

Freshman Steven Arias started on the team last semester after playing for his high school esports team. Arias was confident going into the tournament, stating that he put in the work to do well. Elaine Venter, esports administrator and coach pointed out that Fortnite is Arias’ field of expertise.

Junior Oscar Janin is in his third semester as an esports competitor, but this was his first tournament. Arias and Janin stated that “hyping each other up” was how they stayed focused in games.

Out of 21 teams, the CMU Mavs came in 12th with 36 points. The winning team, UMD Red, totaled 90 points. Points are accumulated by a kill death ratio in the game.

There were four matches, the first one was completely sat out by CMU Mavs, but the other three were played.

“After some technical difficulties that saw us missing the first round, the team rallied best they could,” Venter said.

Eight teams did not score any points at all, even though CMU Mavs were the only ones who missed the first round. Arias and Janin competed well together and still scored well despite the setbacks.

The esports team does not have a date for the next tournament, but tryouts will be held Feb. 15-19, more information will be posted to their Instagram, cmesauesports.
