The Hardrockers scored first in double overtime as Kolten Mortensen got his own rebound and made the put back layup. South Dakota Mines (SDM) extended their lead to four-points with Mortensen getting another offensive rebound and made a layup on a second chance opportunity.

Senior guard Georgie Dancer gave the Mavericks a two-point lead as he made two shots from behind the arc on back-to-back possessions.

The Hardrockers were forced into a situation where they needed to foul a Maverick to stay in the game. SDM fouled CMU players on three different occasions, but the Mavericks were five of six from the free-throw line to win the game.

CMU and SDM were tied at 62 entering the first overtime period. The first overtime period started and finished with both teams trading shots as neither team built more than a two-point lead.

Dancer scored 11 of his 18 points in the first overtime.

The Mavericks fell behind early in the game with the Hardrockers opening the game on a nine to zero run. Each time CMU was able to cut into SDM’s lead, the Hardrockers were quick to open it back up.

SDM’s Brevin Walter led the game in scoring in first half with 19 points as he was shooting 80% from the floor.

Walter made a layup to get the Hardrockers on the board first in the second half to give them a 35-26 lead. The Mavericks cut SDM’s lead to three-point in the first five minutes of the half.

Three minutes later, CMU tied the game up at 43 as senior guard Jared Small made a three. The Hardrockers answered with a three of their own before Threatt made a three on the next possession.

The Mavericks took their first lead of the game with 8:52 left in the second half as sophomore forward Ethan Menzies made a layup through traffic. Neither team could gain an edge after Menzies gave CMU the lead as they traded baskets back and forth.

With 1:19 left in the second half, the Hardrockers took a one-point lead as Wilfred Dickson fought through traffic to convert the layup.

Dancer gave the Mavericks a one-point lead before SDM took the lead back as Alejando Rama made a three on the other end.

Dancer drew a foul with eight seconds left and he went to the free throw line and converted both to tie the game up. Rama missed a layup for SDM and CMU got the rebound with one second left in the half which gave the Mavericks one shot to win the game.

The only negative for the Mavericks was the fact they had to go the entire floor with one second left.

They got the inbounds pass in which went the length of the floor with Menzies catching the pass and putting up a three. Unfortunately for CMU, the shot ended up no good which sent the game to overtime.

Walter was SDM’s leading scorer as he finished the game with 24 points.

CMU’s game on Monday, Feb. 8 against Colorado School of Mines was postponed for a second time and it hasn’t been rescheduled yet.

The postponement makes the Maverick’s next game against Adams State University on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Brownson Arena.
