Mavericks outlast Cougars

The Mavericks battle against the Cougars to win the match 3-0.

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) set the tone for this game right away in the first match. Freshman setter Sabrina VanDeList was the first one to step to the serving line for the Mavericks and did what her coaches needed her to do.

VanDeList served the first four points of the game for CMU, getting the first serving ace for the team on her last point.

“I wanted to just go out aggressive and have the energy off the bat because I didn’t want them to have that energy so I was like do what I can and then go from there,” VanDeList said.

VanDeList finished the day with 28 assists, two aces and three points.

Freshman outside hitter Sierra Hunt stepped into this game one time and that was in the first set when the Mavericks needed to change the pace of their game in a close 21-18 match up. Hunt was able to do just that and got another point on the scoreboard for her team with a kill through the middle.

Sophomore right side hitter Maranda Theleus made her first appearance in Brownson Arena this season. She proved that she is one of the game changers that the Mavericks have on this team.

Theleus came in big time for the Mavericks in the second and third sets of the match. She had two kills of her own as well as many balls that got blocked by the cougars that could have been points for the Mavericks.

“We all know what Maranda can bring. We have three really good right sides with Gabby and Ashton as well. I think that the block in the second set was a huge momentum swing too. SHe just did a really good job of pressing,” Head Coach, Dave Fleming said.

The Mavericks had a few moments in the second set that really swung things their way. Theleus had one when she had a huge block from the right side that gave up a scoring opportunity for Colorado Christian University (CCU).

The second came from junior outside hitter Holly Schmidt when she took the ball from the middle back of the court and made a great dig that went back to the Cougars side of the net but they did not capitalize on that play. Those two plays made a difference in another close match that ended 25-21.

Freshman setter Hahni Johnson and outside hitter Gabrielle Vogt continue to play like they have been Mavericks for years even though they are still getting used to college volleyball.

Johnson continued to be dominant from behind the serving line with one serving ace in the day. She also contributed to the offense by having 11 assists.

Vogt continues her hot streak and helps the Mavericks tremendously on the offensive side of things. Vogt had 13 kills through the three sets.

The Mavericks continue their season in Rapid City S.D., when they compete against Fort Lewis College and South Dakota Mines on Feb. 20 starting at 2 P.M.
